A Mehndi ceremony is a pre-wedding ritual in Indian culture where intricate henna designs are applied to the bride's hands and feet. It is typically held the night before the wedding and has the following key aspects:
The bride gets elaborate henna patterns drawn on her hands up to the elbows and feet, often depicting auspicious symbols like the groom on a horse, Hindu deities, flowers, etc. This is believed to cool the body and relieve stress before the wedding.[1][2]
Only the bride gets mehndi on her feet. Other female relatives and friends can get simpler designs on their palms and hands.[1]
It is organized by the bride's family and attended by women from both sides. Male relatives may join later for celebrations.[1][2]
- After the mehndi application, there is a festive party with singing, dancing, food and fun performances by relatives.[2][3]
- The bride is not supposed to remove the mehndi until the next day, allowing the dye to darken and last longer.[1]
So in essence, the Mehndi ceremony combines the application of intricate henna art on the bride with joyous pre-wedding celebrations involving both families.[1][2][3][4]
